What to drink whilst reading Angela Carter's Book of Fairy Tales

September 19, 2017

Angela Carter's Book of Fairy Tales brings together a collection of stories from different cultures and eras. Some of them will be familiar to you as stories you grew up with, others completely new and some just a little twisted.

I've long been fascinated by fairy tales and when I had the opportunity to study them at university I leapt at the chance. They're so special because they capture our imagination and have become such an interwoven part of our cultural landscape. I love learning about the stories different people associate with different places and events. Only today, in preparation for another part of our trip across America, I have been reading about the Devil's Tower and the stories of how it was created. Go and read them - they're fantastic!

For Angela Carter's collection, I wanted a drink that was sippable and rich with a fantastic colour, just like the stories themselves. I hit upon a Dolcetto d'Alba, a wonderfully magenta wine with plenty of cherries and freshness. Drinking it made me feel like I was in an Italian forest; the ideal spot to read fairy tales old and new, fun and dark.

Have you tried the pairing? Let me know in the comments!
